British Lions Tour Malta 2011

LIONS CONQUER MALTA – NOW FOR SOUTH AFRICA?

Following their historic series win in Australia last October, the British Lions sought to extend their winning streak during a week-long excursion to Malta. The trip concluded on a high note with a 17-7 Test victory over the hosts, showcasing Wayne Smith’s squad’s consistent performance. The Lions also engaged in warm-up games against local representative sides, defeating Top Guns 15-9 but facing a 16-8 setback against a formidable team from St Georges.

Despite the initial defeat, these fixtures served as valuable preparation for the encounter with former European champions, Malta. Local hero Clayton Attard, who had distinguished himself Down Under, represented the Lions with split loyalties. The Lions’ prowess shone as Attard, Jason Murgatroyd, and Smith secured victories against their Maltese counterparts.

The Lions dominated the second session, claiming seven consecutive frames through Attard, Murgatroyd, Smith, Matthew, Lomax, Hawkins, and Stanley. Malta managed to reduce the arrears to 13-3, but the Lions continued their commanding lead.

Player of the week for the Lions was Jason Murgatroyd, securing an impressive seven wins out of nine frames. The final score stood at 17-7, with Malta claiming the last word as Mario Brincat defeated the unfortunate Waring. The Lions left Malta having maintained their winning form, setting a positive tone for future engagements.
